Field Service Manager – Steam Turbines

Job Purpose


The Field Service Manager will lead and oversee field service activities associated with the maintenance, repair and overhaul of steam turbines. The position is responsible for managing technical field service advisors, turbine mechanics and external contractors, while coordinating service and overhaul projects from planning through completion.


The role will ensure that all field activities are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. The Field Service Manager will also act as a key contact for customers, supporting long-term relationships and contributing to business development and strategic growth.


Key Responsibilities


Field Service Operations


  • Manage the delivery of field service operations for steam turbine maintenance, repair and overhaul activities.

  • Plan, coordinate and schedule field service projects, ensuring work is completed within agreed timelines, budgets and quality requirements.

  • Lead field service teams and provide technical direction, guidance, coaching and support.

  • Recruit, develop and manage experienced technical field service advisors, turbine mechanics and supporting personnel.

  • Coordinate and manage third-party contractors and external service providers as required.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for field service activities, ensuring effective communication between customers, field teams and internal stakeholders.

  • Develop a strong understanding of customer requirements and ensure service delivery consistently meets or exceeds expectations.

  • Identify and implement practical solutions to maximise service quality, operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.


Steam Turbine Technical Support


  • Provide technical leadership in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and overhaul of steam turbines.

  • Support teams during turbine disassembly, inspection, repair, reassembly and commissioning activities.

  • Ensure appropriate quality control procedures are followed throughout disassembly, reassembly and Foreign Material Exclusion (FME) processes.

  • Troubleshoot turbine-related technical issues and provide appropriate guidance to field personnel.

  • Ensure field teams have access to the required technical documentation, equipment manuals, tools and resources.


Health, Safety, Environment & Compliance


  • Ensure all field operations comply with applicable legal, regulatory and industry requirements.

  • Obtain and maintain the necessary licences, permits and certifications required to conduct operations across relevant states.

  • Establish, implement and continuously improve HSE policies, procedures and practices.

  • Promote a strong safety culture across all field activities and ensure compliance with company and customer safety requirements.

  • Ensure appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available and correctly used at all job sites.

  • Monitor field activities to ensure safe working practices are consistently maintained.


Supply Chain & Inventory


  • Ensure effective Supply Chain Management processes and procedures are established and followed to support field operations.

  • Work closely with relevant teams to ensure equipment, spare parts, tools and materials are available when required.

  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels to support service activities while minimising operational disruption and service delays.

  • Monitor the availability and quality of resources required for field projects.


Customer & Stakeholder Management


  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers and key stakeholders.

  • Serve as the principal customer contact for field service matters.

  • Understand customer expectations and translate them into effective service delivery.

  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to resolve issues and deliver successful projects.

  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, customers and service partners.


Reporting & Documentation


  • Prepare daily, periodic and final reports covering field service activities, project progress, operational performance and customer feedback.

  • Monitor project performance against agreed schedules, budgets and quality targets.

  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of field activities, including work orders, service reports, technical documentation and equipment manuals.

  • Ensure all required service documentation is completed accurately and maintained in accordance with company procedures.


Competencies & Skills


  • Strong commercial and strategic orientation, with an understanding of sales and customer development.

  • Proven experience managing both union and non-union field service crews.

  • Strong troubleshooting capability with steam turbines and related rotating equipment.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of turbine maintenance, repair and overhaul activities.

  • Class A Contractor Licence holder or able to meet the requirements for obtaining the relevant licence.

  • Strong stakeholder management and cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Sound judgement, analytical thinking and effective decision-making capability.

  • Strong leadership and people-development skills.

  • Ability to adapt to changing operational requirements and drive continuous improvement.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a demanding field-service environment.


Technical & Business Knowledge


  • Strong knowledge of industrial equipment and product portfolios, particularly rotating equipment and power generation applications, with specific experience in steam turbines highly desirable.

  • Good understanding of business development and sales processes, methods and practices.

  • Awareness of current business, industrial and market developments.

  • Understanding of emerging market trends, customer needs and expectations, and competitor activity.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and analytical tools.

  • Good techno-commercial understanding of industrial products and service portfolios.

  • Spanish language skills would be considered an advantage.


Experience & Qualifications


  • Minimum 10 years of direct field service experience, preferably within the power generation, rotating equipment or steam turbine industry.

  • Significant experience managing field service teams and complex turbine maintenance, repair and overhaul projects.

  • Proven experience working directly with customers and managing contractors and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience in a commercially focused field service environment, with an understanding of customer relationships and business growth.
